Missy asked what our favorite hymn and favorite modern song are, and I am so pleased to answer!
My favorite hymn, by far would have to be Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing . . . early on when I was being drawn to Christ a pastor of mine broke down this hymn with a small group of us. It marked the start of my love of hymns, as I searched through the "boring words" of each one to find the deep meaning. I suddenly found beauty in the words. The song today still pulls so strongly at my heart with its truth. I chose this song to be at our "second wedding". (Same guy, different day)
1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of thy redeeming love.
2. Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
3. O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
My favorite recent/modern song is HOW MANY KINGS from
the band DOWN HERE
(Actually, my favorite is the modern version of the hymn
I Am Not Skilled to Understand by Aaron Schust,
but I thought that would be cheating by using two hymns)
How Many Kings
Follow the star to a place unexpected
Would you believe after all we’ve projected
A child in a manger
Lowly and small, the weakest of all
Unlikeliest hero, wrapped in his mothers shawl
Just a child
Is this who we’ve waited for?
Cause how many kings, stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
How many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Bringing our gifts for the newborn savior
All that we have whether costly or meek
Because we believe
Gold for his honor and frankincense for his pleasure
And myrrh for the cross he’ll suffer
Do you believe, is this who we’ve waited for?
It’s who we’ve waited for
How many kings, stepped down from their thrones?
How many lords have abandoned their homes?
How many greats have become the least for me?
How many Gods have poured out their hearts
To romance a world that has torn all apart?
How many fathers gave up their sons for me?
Only one did that for me
All for me
All for you
All for me
All for you

Awesome.
ReplyDeleteCome Thou Fount was sung at our wedding, and I want all the same songs sung at my funeral too.
They should wheel out our coffins to Here Comes the Bride :)
Interesting to learn of your favourite hymn. And it is a great help to ponder the words of these songs a little more carefully than is possible when we sing them on Sundays. To think of what the writer is saying, and how it relates to Scripture, that makes our singing more meaningful.
ReplyDeleteWith a weekly newspaper column (over 600 written now), and my daily blog, Wordwise Hymns, I've been trying to do just that.
